Let’s talk about SEWER LINES
As a homeowner, you’re responsible for the lateral sewer line—the section of pipe that carries wastewater from your house to where it connects with the city’s main line at the street.
If a clog or backup happens in this stretch, it’s up to you—not the city—to handle repairs or cleaning.
This is why having a proper exterior sewer cleanout is important.
What is a cleanout?:
A cleanout is a capped pipe, usually 4 inches wide, that sticks a few inches out of the ground and gives direct access to your lateral line. Having one makes it much easier (and often less expensive) for plumbers to clear blockages quickly without digging or tearing into your home’s plumbing. It also allows for much more efficient scoping and maintenance.
General Cost Reference:
Installing a cleanout: Typically $500-3,500 depending on a number of factors
Minor issues / Cleaning: may cost between $300-$1,000
Moderate repairs (such as partial replacement): may cost $1,000-$7,000
Major repairs (such as full replacement with excavation): depending on circumstances may run $5,000 - $20,000. We typically see homes falling in the $10,000-$17,000 range but this can be affected by many factors.
Materials Matter:
Sewer laterals can be made from a variety of materials, and what you’ll find often depends on the age of the home.
For example, a house built in the 1930s may still have clay, cast iron, or even Orangeburg (a type of paper-and-tar pipe used mid-century) — all of which are prone to cracking, root intrusion, and deterioration over time.
In contrast, most modern homes are built with PVC (plastic) pipe, which is smooth, durable, and resistant to root growth and corrosion. PVC is also easier to repair or replace in sections, making it the preferred standard for today’s sewer laterals.
How do I know what material my lateral is made of?
A sewer scope, or sewer line inspection, will be able to tell you the material.
So, if my house is new construction - why would I even pay for a sewer scope?
We’re seeing a record number of damaged sewer laterals on new construction - YES, brand new homes!
We’re seeing parts of line being crushed by machinery during construction, rocks in the line, etc. Catching potential problems early while still under builder warranty - and before you have to dig up that beautiful grass you worked so hard to grow - is key.
Why a Sewer Scope Is Worth It
Your sewer lateral is one of the most important—and most expensive—parts of your home, yet it’s buried out of sight. Whether your home is 100 years old or brand-new , problems can still exist, and repairs can be costly.
A sewer scope is a simple, affordable inspection that gives you peace of mind, helps you understand the true condition of the line, and can even save you thousands if issues are found while you’re still negotiating or under builder warranty. For most homebuyers, ordering a sewer scope is a small step that provides big protection.
Schedule your sewer scope today to protect your investment and avoid costly surprises down the road.
